What’s Better Around A Swimming Pool – Bluestone or Concrete?
When you are working out whether to go with Bluestone or another option bear these things in mind:
1. Think about Heat Tolerance…
We are fortunate to have temperatures that vary between 30 and 35 degrees during summer. Of course, we have the odd day where it climbs much higher than that but records show that the majority of summer days are in this range. Tests have been carried to work out the differences in heat tolerance of Bluestone compared to concrete pavers.
It has been consistently found that Bluestone Pavers were between 1-2 degrees COOLER.
2. DURABILITY – Will one stand the test of time better than another?
Bluestone pavers are not pigmented, and the materials used are not man-made. They form from volcanic activity over thousands of years. This fact ensures that they will not fade or diminish in any way. Bluestone has always been popular due to its strength.
Concrete pavers will fade over time. The pigments used to colour them will wear due to foot traffic. It is also more likely to crack and crumble with temperature fluctuations. In short, they are not the best recommended long term option for paving around your pool.
3. NON- SLIP PROPERTIES – Which paver will be safest for my kids around my swimming pool?
Bluestone pavers with a sawn finish have one of the HIGHEST non-slip ratings that you can get for an outdoor paver. At the same time, it still feels comfortable underfoot. Bluestone is frequently installed in commercial and domestic outdoor paving areas.
4. AESTHETIC APPEAL – Does one look better?
Thousands of architects and designers in Australia request bluestone for its cool natural ashy tones. The spiralling catspaw is commonly flaunted as a decorative feature. As a result, it has become the chic quintessential look of Melbourne and its surrounding suburbs.
5. PRICE – Which paver offers the better value?
Concrete paving has a reputation for appearing to be a cheaper paving option. Don’t take that as gospel though. The quality can be lacking and you may end up having to replace the pavers more often. Higher quality concrete paving can turn out to be similar or more expensive than bluestone.
So, now you know more about the benefits, which will you choose?

Timber decking provides extra social space that’s ideal for children playing, dining and entertaining. Of course, you can just relax and enjoy a glass of wine after a long, hard week. It is one of the most attractive additions that you can make to your home.
